Parental Support
As a clinician, I have had over 35 years of experience working closely with individuals of all ages and with a variety of disabilities. Whilst my initial and ongoing professional education and training are essential, the experience of parenting my twin daughters, born in 1996 and diagnosed with Autism between 2 and 3 years of age, , has proven invaluable in my understanding of what it means to parent children 24/7 in such unusual circumstances– the highs, the lows, the breath holding moments, the unexpected tears, the unanswerable questions, the unspoken worries, the amazement at everyone’s resilience, the joy of achievement, the pride in independence, to name but a few.
Everyone’s journey is different. Every individual, every family has their unique flavour, needs, wants and values. My lived experience does not mean that I totally understand your personal journey, but I can share with you the ways in which parenting an individual with a disability can change your day to day perspectives and activities as well as your long term thoughts and plans. As a result, I can then use both my professional skills and lived experience to work with you to identify and develop pathways for moving forward that are achievable, respectful, beneficial and supportive for both you and your child, regardless of their age.
I will work alongside you to:
- Clearly and concisely identify yours and your child’s current needs, strengths, challenges and priorities;
- Develop effective and flexible strategies to meet your identified needs, wants and goals;
- Identify possible funding and other resources that will be useful and beneficial to you in implementing your identified strategies –including local, regional, state, national, private and/ or public sources;
- Assist in building and maintaining peer in-person and/or online parent-to-parent support opportunities.
